C language was developed by Dennis Ritchie in 1972 at the bell laboratories of AT&T (American Telephone & Telegraph) located in the USA.

  • Dennis Ritchie was the founder of the C language and is also known as the father of the C language.
  • C language is developed from the B language which was developed by Ken Thompson in 1970 at AT&T bell laboratories.

The B language was adopted from a language called BCPL (Basic Combined Programming Language) which was developed by Martin Richards in 1967 at Cambridge University.

History of ANSI C

In 1982, ANSI (American National Standard Institute) formed a committee to standardize the C language. Finally, the C language was standardized by ANSI in 1980. C language is also called ‘ANSI C’. It appeared by the international standards organization (ISO) in 1990.

C language was developed to overcome the problems of the previous language such as B, BCPL, etc.
